Glass Wall Systems STC Rating Comparison

Glass wall interiors are ideal for end users looking for spaces that feel open, have lots of natural light, and a modern feel. But the question many of our A&D clients ask on behalf of their clients is: What about sound privacy? In our previous blog post, we offered an overview of what STC ratings are and their practical applications in commercial environments. In this blog post we take a closer look at our different systems and how their STC ratings compare.

The LP Series and VETRO Series

The LP Series (36 STC) and VETRO Series (39 STC) is ideal for spaces where visual transparency is prioritized over absolute sound privacy. These systems are great for collaborative zones in an open office, casual break areas, or general circulation spaces. While conversations might be muffled, they wouldn’t necessarily be understood, especially when the glass walls are combined with other elements like flooring, ceiling systems, and wall panelling.

The HUSH and DG Series

Both the HUSH and DG systems offer a 50 STC rating.  The jump from STC 38 to STC 50 is a dramatic improvement, shifting from “loud speech heard but not understood” to “loud sounds very faint,” making a tangible difference in perceived privacy and quiet.

Whether you go with the HUSH or the DG will depend on the end results you’re looking to achieve. For example, if you’re looking to future proof your space, the HUSH supports both single and double glazing. So, if you start with one glazing type you can always switch to the other in the future if a need presents itself. However, if your design calls for a transom, you may want to go for the DG or our ENDURE Series.

The ENDURE Series

The ENDURE Series was designed for high-traffic environments. These areas are typically noisy. This double-glazed system is 4.5” thick and was designed with acoustics in mind. With a 51 STC rating, this glass wall system is ideal for high-level boardrooms, private executive suites, atriums, entrances, and other areas where sound privacy is non-negotiable. While our HUSH and DG Series are also high-acoustic performers, the ENDURE offers a slightly higher STC rating and can accommodate walls over 10 feet high.

The EXTEND Series

We saved the EXTEND Series for last because, unlike the other systems in our portfolio, this is an operable wall. While the construction is sound, this system cannot be sealed the same way our other systems are. It needs to move, and this impacts the STC rating. With that said, the system is double-glazed and has, and even though it’s an operable wal,l it has an STC rating of 43. Loud sounds might still be heard, but they will be dampened, and they won’t be audible.
